1. What are some tried-and-true methods to keep your cannabis or hemp operation free from insects?

Effective insect control requires implementation of a proactive integrated pest management (IPM) program inclusive of a proven product solution. From keeping growing sites clean, to proper maintenance and upkeep, to product selection, a strong IPM program will decrease your risk of infestation. Essentria® IC Pro insecticide is a botanically derived, environmentally friendly pest control solution approved for use on cannabis and hemp. It provides residual control for a wide variety of listed insects, including spider mites, aphids and more.

2. What are some key differences between using synthetic pesticides and using botanically derived pesticides for cannabis and hemp?

Toxicity, residue, and environmental impact are factors that can vary tremendously when comparing botanically derived pesticides to synthetics. Most synthetic pesticides are not approved for use on cannabis because end-uses are mostly for human consumption. Botanicals are generally considered less harmful in all of these areas and can be an effective solution for cannabis and hemp pest control.

3. When determining whether or not to use new insect control products for your grow, what are the most important factors to consider?

Number one in the cannabis and hemp realm is legislation. There can be a lot of variation between states in all aspects of growing, so it’s crucial to make sure the product you’re considering is approved for use on cannabis and hemp in your state. Number two is product effectiveness–you can often determine whether a product will work well for your grow by checking out testimonials and case studies from growers with comparable operations or via your own in-house evaluation on test plots.

4. What are some valuable resources that cannabis and hemp growers can access to stay up to date on insect control tips, industry updates and legislation?

EPA and FDA guidelines are the first go-to source for growers, but there are a number of other ways to stay informed on best practices for insect control, including trade shows, peer-reviewed white papers, university extension websites and trusted trade publications like Cannabis Business Times.

5. How can new growers determine which products are approved for cannabis and hemp?

Although botanical insect solutions are generally a better choice than synthetics for use on cannabis and hemp, some products that are marketed as natural may not be approved. AAPCO, or the American Association of Pest Control Officials, was organized by the states to provide additional oversight over what is allowed on 25(b) products by developing new efficacy standards, refining product labeling and registration requirements. When considering implementing a new product into your program, a good first step is to choose one that’s AAPCO (FIFRA 25(b) exempt), like Essentria® IC Pro insecticide.

Essentria is a registered trademark of Wellmark International.
