Island Peži Unveils Cannabis Cultivation Site in Minnesota

The Prairie Island Indian Community’s cannabis venture in Minnesota is opening a 13-acre campus to produce more than 10,000 pounds annually.

A Piic FlowerCourtesy of Island Peži[PRESS RELEASE] – WELCH, Minn., Feb. 11, 2025 – Island Peži, a native cannabis company from The Prairie Island Indian Community (PIIC) in Minnesota, announced Prairie Island’s Cannabis Co., a cultivation site designed for vertically integrated cannabis farming. This initiative reflects the tribe’s commitment to fostering economic independence and preserving the land.

The Prairie Island Cannabis Campus spans 13 acres and features a diverse range of facilities for cannabis cultivation, extraction, processing and distribution. Strategically designed for scalability, the campus anticipates producing over 10,000 pounds of cannabis and cannabis extracts with plans to distribute both through the Island Pezi dispensary and eventually to the wider Minnesota market. The inaugural harvest includes more than 20 unique flower cultivars, showcasing a carefully curated blend of both new and classic genetics.

“Prairie Island Cannabis Campus is a significant step toward economic sovereignty and self-determination for our tribe,” PIIC President Grant Johnson said. “The cultivation site has provided new opportunities for sustainable economic growth and has created numerous job opportunities within our community. We are proud to take this step while respecting our traditions and ensuring responsible stewardship of our land.”
